Requirements for Participating

Your high school student needs to participate in one of the five high school programs at Home School Academy:

  • College Career Connection (Tuesdays, not required to attend class at Home School Academy but must check in with a teacher)

  • Spark (Wednesdays from 8:45 AM to 3:45 PM)

  • Studio Art (Thursdays from 8:45 AM to 3:45 PM)

  • Arts (Fridays from 8:45 AM to 3:45 PM)

  • Set Design and Stage Crew (Fridays from 8:45 AM to 3:45 PM)

Once your high school student is enrolled in one of these programs, they may enroll for concurrent/enrollment courses through the district. You can enroll in any of our programs at homeschool.asd20.org.

Apply

To apply, ensure your high school student is enrolled in Home School Academy and then complete the College and Career Services application. This application needs to be completed by April 1 for the fall semester and November 1 for the spring semester.

Concurrent Enrollment

Which Colleges Participate in the Program?

Your high school student can attend Pikes Peak State College (PPSC), University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS), and Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSU).

Earning both High School and College Credits

High school students receive a transcript from the college, and the courses are also listed on their high school transcript to fulfill specific high school credit requirements.

D20 does not maintain transcripts for homeschooled high school students but parents can refer to the appendices in our College and Career Program Guide for guidance on how to count specific college courses toward their homeschool transcripts.

Choosing a Class

Unfortunately, Home School Academy is not able to assist with selecting college classes since we are not affiliated with the college. Instead, if your high school student needs help, reach out to the academic advisor at the college where your high school student plans to take classes. They can provide guidance and support.

Register for Classes at Your Chosen College

Below are links to each of the college’s course catalogs and schedules:

Number of Credits per Semester

High school students can enroll in up to 11 credit hours.

Placement Testing

Most high school students do not need to take placement tests. However, requirements can vary, so it’s a good idea to check the specific guidelines for each institution. Find out more about placement testing on the PPSC website.

Preparing for college-level English and Math classes at PPSC, UCCS, or MSU

If your high school student is not yet ready for college-level English and Math courses, they can use EdReady to strengthen their skills and prepare for these classes. EdReady offers personalized learning plans to help high school students build the knowledge they need to succeed in college-level coursework.

Taking Classes at UCCS, PPSC, and MSU Denver in the Same Semester

Typically, this occurs when high school students are participating in Concurrent Enrollment through PPSC and the CU Succeed Platinum program through UCCS. Students participating in Concurrent Enrollment at multiple colleges will be required to pay fees for each college. Also, Home School Academy high school students can only take a total of 11 credit hours of Concurrent Enrollment. Dual enrollment, CU Succeed Platinum, and Math Online, don't count toward the total.

Concurrent Enrollment for High School Who are not Enrolled in their District

A district cannot sponsor a student for concurrent enrollment unless the student is enrolled in that district. Please see the Colorado Department of Education for more detailed information.

Dual Enrollment

Career and Technical Education (CTE) Courses at D20 High Schools

Home School Academy high school students can take individual Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses at a D20 high school, subject to the principal's approval and available space. For full Career and Technical Education programs like construction trades or auto technicians, high school students may need to be classified as part-time Liberty High School students due to the amount of high school credit earned. If combined with Home School Academy high school programs, they may be considered full-time with D20. Please contact the Home School Academy to discuss this possibility further.

CTE Course Credit

The courses offered in each of the Career and Technical Education programs are comparable to those taken by adult high school students, providing the same hours and training needed to prepare for the licensure exam at the end of the 1- or 2-year program. However, high school students must pass the exam to receive their certification. Some high school students may complete the program but not earn certification if they choose not to take the exam or are unsuccessful in passing it.

Are HSA students able to participate in Career Start programs?

No, HSA students cannot participate in Career Start programs as it exceeds the 11 credit hour limit. However, they can choose specific Career and Technical Education courses, such as welding, through an a la carte selection. To enroll in these courses, students need to request them via a course change request after being approved for the same number of credit hours through guaranteed transfer (GT) classes found in the College and Career Program Guide. Please note, as non-Career Start students, they will take these courses alongside the general PPSC student body.

Participating in Activities at other D20 High Schools while in HSA Concurrent Enrollment

Students may participate in activities at other D20 High Schools (Choir, etc.) and in Concurrent Enrollment at the same time as long as both the D20 high school and Home School Academy agree to the arrangement.

Grade Point Average Calculations

General GPA Calculation Formula for unweighted courses:

  • A = 4

  • B = 3

  • C = 2

  • D = 1

  • F = 0

For weighted courses:

  • A = 5

  • B = 4

  • C = 3

  • (Note: Ds and Fs are typically not weighted.)

To calculate a GPA, assign the corresponding number to each grade on the transcript, then divide the total by the number of courses for a cumulative GPA. You can also calculate GPA by semester.

Example Calculation:

If a student earned:

  • 3 As (3×4),

  • 2 Bs (2×3),

  • and 2 weighted Bs (2×4) in college courses during a semester,

The total would be 26 points across 7 courses, resulting in a GPA of 3.71 (26 ÷ 7).
