Military and Family Life Counselor (MFLC)

MFLC Informed Consent.pdf

Due to the unique challenges faced by military families, DoD provides professional licensed counseling support to those who are Active Duty or recently retired via the Military Family Life Consultant (MFLC) program.  Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines, Guard, Reserves, and civilians who are embedded within units all qualify for this free and confidential service.

MFLCs provide short-term, solution-focused counseling to couples, families, and individuals.  School-based MFLCs also engage in activities with children and youth at their schools, work with parents and staff to address behaviors and interactions, and facilitate peer groups.  MFLCs support military members and their families as they deal with everyday stressors such as communication, family dynamics, grief/loss, deployment, reintegration, relocation, and relationships. MFLCs are able help direct families or individuals towards resources in the community.  MFLCs neither record any personally identifying information nor any details of what is shared.

Military families are encouraged to sign a consent form in order to indicate whether or not they will allow their children to participate in the MFLC program.  Even with permission, the MFLC will NOT be pulling students out of class unless a specific need manifests itself.  This being said, it is critical to encourage your child to self-advocate and to approach the MFLC if they want to address a particular issue, and for parents to notify the MFLC if there are ongoing or anticipated concerns.  If as a parent you have spoken to the MFLC regarding an upcoming event (such as deployment,) please remind the MFLC when the event is imminent.  The MFLC is very aware of the unique situation at HSA where students only attend one day per week, and she will consult with the child's parents if it appears that regular sessions or participation in a group might be beneficial.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call.
